Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one of the most well-researched, skills-based therapies available, and at Grand Slam Psych, we do it differently. Rather than a rigid, manualized program, Dr. El McCabe takes a personalized approach: drawing from all four pillars of DBT to build a skill set that actually fits your life, your struggles, and your goals.

Whether you’re managing intense emotions, navigating difficult relationships, or looking for concrete tools to handle life’s hardest moments, DBT can help, and Dr. McCabe is here to make it practical, not overwhelming.

What Is DBT?

DBT was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder, but decades of research have expanded its applications. Today it’s one of the most effective therapeutic approaches for anyone struggling with emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, interpersonal conflict, or patterns of self-destructive behavior.

It’s built around four core skill areas, what DBT calls its four pillars:

  • Mindfulness, learning to stay present, observe your thoughts without judgment, and respond rather than react
  • Emotion Regulation, understanding where your emotions come from and building skills to manage them effectively
  • Distress Tolerance, getting through crisis moments without making things worse
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness, communicating clearly, setting boundaries, and maintaining relationships that matter to you

Is DBT Right for You?

DBT is an excellent fit if you’re working through any of the following:

• Staying mindful & being present in their lives

• Understanding & regulating their emotions

• Tolerating & working through distress

• Interpersonal relationships & persistent conflict

• Bipolar Disorder & other mood disorders

• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

• Personality Disorders

It’s also a strong complement to sports psychology, many athletes find that DBT-based emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills translate directly into better performance under pressure. If that intersection interests you, learn more about Dr. McCabe’s Sports Psychology services →

What to Expect

Sessions are collaborative and conversational, not a lecture on skills theory. Dr. McCabe explains concepts in plain language, connects them to what you’re actually going through, and helps you figure out how to apply them when it matters most.

First sessions are always about getting to know you and figuring out where to start. From there, the pace is yours to set.

The Grand Slam Approach to DBT

The approach to DBT at Grand Slam Psych is unique from the traditional manualized approach. In our program, all skills from the four pillars of DBT (mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, & distress tolerance) are reviewed in individual therapy or group sessions. However, there is a specific focus on processing what comes up for the client when learning and applying these skills. Dr. McCabe rarely assigns DBT homework and does not offer phone coaching (after hours contact) to clients. This means no rigid homework assignments, no cookie-cutter workbooks. Instead, Dr. McCabe hand-selects the most relevant skills for your specific situation, and takes the time to process what comes up for you as you learn and apply them. Skills without self-understanding only go so far.

For clients who want to move faster, the All-Star DBT Intensive is a condensed format that delivers the most impactful skills for your needs as efficiently as possible, ideal for those with specific, time-sensitive goals or those who’ve tried traditional DBT before and want a different experience.
